The Preferred theory is from the produces, so it’s what they want the audience to see. E.G. An advert for food items.

The Negotiated theory is from the audience who accept the advert and what the producers want them to accept.

The Oppositional theory is from the rebel audience who don’t accept the advert and try to establish the wrong thing about it E.G. Supersize me against McDonalds

NEWS VALUES: NEGATIVITY

February 16, 2011

Negativity: Bad news is more exciting than good news. Stories about death, tragedy, bankruptcy, violence, damage, natural disasters, political upheaval or simply extreme weather conditions are always rated above positive stories such as royal weddings or celebrations.  Bad news stories are more likely to be reported than good news because they are more likely to score high on other news values, such as threshold, unexpectedness, unambiguity and meaningfulness.

Media Studies Exam

Media Studies Exam

The only way is Essex.

The interesting form about the text The Only Way Is Essex is that it is a genre is a mix between Reality and Drama. The code and conventions used in the show are the clothing which is flashy and expensive, Expensive cars are used to show that they are rich. Also the sets used are the characters typical days out, the women getting their nails done and the men going to the gym.

The show’s opening credits are bright and use the colour scheme of Purple, White and silver. These colours used to show off the status of the people such as the rich and also it helps the audience see how the characters lives are.

The shots used in the episode and Far shots for example, when the two character s Lauren and Becky are walking up a hill to the nails bar and are talking to each other about a party. Close up’s are used when just one character is talking for example, the character Mark talking in the car, the camera would just focus on him when he is talking then move to his friend James when he is speaking.

The music used in the intro is flashy and from pop culture genre, the line ‘The only way is up’ signifies that the people will only go up in life and that they are successful.

In the intro, they use overlay shots of Watches, rings and cars. This signifies that they are rich and it shows what they own.

The targeted audience for this show is Early 20’s to 25 Plus, The way the show appeals to the audience is by using everyday situations such as getting their nails done their hair done and the men going to the gym. Also they have real drama such as breaking up with the partner and arguments. The producers also use segmentation like,

-          Age

-          Gender

-          Sexuality

-          Race

These are used to help the Show get more rating’s and to help boost the ratings, so the show would stay on the Television.

The role of the institution is to play adverts’ like Phones 4 U and supermarket adverts to help get more money from the advertisers, and also they show cheap rate adverts.

The role of the institution is to put adverts that appeal to the show, like cars adverts, jewellery and Hair products. They do this to appeal to the audience and also the show, because it would also help the products because they would get more sales.

The representations of the Women are of course the Typical ‘Essex’ Women and how they would act on a normal day, For example, Getting their hair done and Nails and so on. The women typically had fake tan on and were getting ready for a party.

The representations of the Men are the Typical ‘Essex’ Lad, Garish, loud and cocky. The men are shown going to the Gym, this shows that the Essex men always get in shape but also they go to the gym all the time. The men were talking about when they go out and their Ex-Girlfriends.

The women were talking about their relationships and a party that was being thrown.

Audience

September 27, 2010

Audience is split up into many Segments E.g. – Age, Gender, Race, and Class and so on.

The different media platforms have many different audiences, for example

Text:

Text has many audiences from Toddlers to the elderly. This different audience’s like different things like Teenagers would have, more gossip and pictures of what celebrities would be wearing, or were about they are. They use more informal print and the writers would use more slang and also would use Colourful text or eye-catching headlines to draw in the targeted audience. Some teenagers would read the more mature audiences magazines.

There is also mature magazines for the more elderly people for example Housewife’s magazines or even bride-to-be’s magazines, would use a more formal print and more information then pictures.

E-Media:

There are certain types of E-media for certain audiences such as Facebook would be used by a range of ages, and would other social networking sites. There are also Game sites like POPGame or other sites.

Broadcast:

The audience is similar to the audience of Text and E-Media, because all three media platforms target the same segments, but broadcast has to accept and reject certain things e.g. sexual content and swearing.

But they also except them after certain times 9PM – 5AM.
